Reward and Recognition, key for Great Employee Experience

Reward and recognition, the key to a Great Employee Experience

Within the vastly different areas that a company has to cover to be profitable, efficient and recognised in the marketplace, employee reward and recognition are often overlooked. Let's look at how we can build a great employee experience to start this new year.

Typically, the main concern of companies is to improve technology, finance, marketing, productivity and so on. These are certainly important, but they often miss one of the simplest keys to success: a great employee experience. The way the employee feels and acts within the company has a direct impact on the company's results and performance.

It is clear that in order to give a good image, we must first feel good and self-confident, this is as old as history. If we do not respect ourselves on the inside, we cannot expect to be respected on the outside.

If we transfer this concept to the company, it is exactly the same. We must improve the working experience on the inside to give a better and stronger image on the outside.

One of the best and most effective tools to promote a great employee experience and focus on employee well-being is to have a good reward and recognition plan in place. With small, simple actions, we can achieve a much more relaxed climate, deepen our connections with employees and increase their engagement.

Lack of recognition leads to disagreement, resentment and demotivation.

When an employee strives to do his or her job well, delivers what is expected and goes the extra mile, he or she needs to be noticed - with a comment, with a note, with some kind of attention.

This does not only mean a pay rise, as many people think. There are many other ways to recognise someone. For example, in many companies where salaries are more than adequate but there are weaknesses in recognition, we see employees who are discouraged and unwilling to cooperate. In many cases, organisations that make management mistakes with regard to their staff often want to solve their problems with an easy tool such as a pay rise.

In other words, if we fail to build a great employee experience within the company, the salary, no matter how high it is, will be of no use. It is especially important to know that these shortcomings cannot be solved lightly, but with a much more comprehensive plan. A promising idea, for example, is to conduct a critical self-assessment that touches on different points to be reviewed, always working together with your managers to improve the employee experience.

self-assessment

Self-assessment, the key to success

Self-assessment is always a great first step on our way to an excellent working environment. Asking basic questions such as: Is my organisation a good place to work? Do I have the resources I need to perform my duties? Do I feel motivated or stimulated? These questions can give us a clear idea of how good our working environment is. It is important to keep in mind that our working environment is not only the physical space where employees perform professionally, but also includes the psychological aspects of the employee's well-being at work. It is not only relevant what we think of our workplace, but also the perception and emotions of the staff towards work.

Workers are human beings, not resources. Therefore, the manager or leader must be supportive; that is, he or she must show genuine concern for the employee in general and not just for his or her performance at work. A supportive work environment recognises the employee's desire for work-life balance and is concerned with building trusting relationships between manager and employee. When department heads openly respect employees, they not only achieve a higher level of performance, but also make employees stay longer with the company.

On the other hand, if we lack recognition in our teams, we can turn employees who are enthusiastic and excellent performers into low-spirited employees who are always on the defensive, make mistakes or become disbelieving and think it is useless to go the extra mile because no one will notice.

Recognising workers' achievements helps to create a great employee experience and encourages people to excel in their tasks.

Reward and Recognition a fundamental pillar for staff morale

Recognition is a management tool

Recognition is a management tool that strengthens the employer-employee relationship and brings about positive changes in an organisation. When you recognise an efficient and effective person, you are also reinforcing the actions and behaviours that the organisation wants to instil in employees.

There are two types of recognition: formal and informal. The former has a monetary or tangible objective, which must be approved by a superior, while the latter is low-cost and is aimed at highlighting the work performed on a day-to-day basis. It can be implemented with a minimum of planning and can take the form of, for example, a thank you card, an email or an unexpected public thank you.

It is worth bearing in mind that, to make the recognition more meaningful and have a deeper impact, you can choose to make it a public event. This will make the recognised employee proud and, at the same time, you will be encouraging other members of staff to go the extra mile.

This recognition can be accompanied by a corporate gift to pamper the employee, which makes it even more desirable. There are a myriad of reward options to choose from, some options could include:

  • A team meal
  • A few days off to spend with the family
  • Tickets to an event
  • Outdoor experiences
  • Dinner at a fancy restaurant
  • A relaxing massage
  • A hotel stay

How to create a great employee experience?Recreational activities outside the workplace

Recognition is not the only option to promote a good working environment. Recreational activities outside the workplace encourage communication and interactions between employees. This type of initiative helps to build healthy relationships and friendships among colleagues.

Market-leading companies are learning a fundamental lesson. That is, to foster a fun work environment and inspire employees to enjoy their work. It's amazing what a good work experience can do. Happy workers are loyal employees, and loyal individuals can do amazing things.

There are thousands of options for fostering a great employee experience. With a little creativity and empathy, we can develop original ideas to connect with our employees and boost morale. The most important thing is to keep this on our daily agenda and treat it with the relevance it deserves.
