The Marietta Dal, a 7500-tonne liberty ship built in the USA in 1944, is one of the most intriguing shipwrecks in the region. In 1950, the 140-meter-long vessel, carrying sulphur, oil, tractors, and other general cargo, ran aground on Smith Rock. Despite efforts to salvage the ship and cargo, the Marietta Dal ultimately broke in two, leaving its remains scattered in 10 to 18 meters of water.
Today, the Marietta Dal wreck makes for a fascinating scuba diving adventure, with a twisted pile of plates, beams, and the long prop shaft waiting to be explored. The most captivating part of the wreck is the cargo of tractors, which resemble small tanks with their caterpillar tracks. Even without the ship''s remains, the area is teeming with marine life, making it a wonderful dive site.
Smith''s Rock, with its three pinnacles and jagged granite beauty, is another must-visit scuba diving location. Although not as picturesque as Flinders Reef, its rugged honeycombed terrain and structure attract a diverse range of fish and coral species. With a maximum depth of around 20 meters, the most interesting features can be found around 15 meters, including large schools of batfish, butter bream, and various coral species. Wobbegong sharks, turtles, spotted rays, and even whale songs during migration season make this site truly special.
